Three spots for a great photo of the Catalina Avalon Harbor

When photographing Avalon for the recent Catalina Photowalk, I found that there were 3 great places to nab a killer shot of the harbor. First was shortly before docking, from the deck of the Catalina Express, as we sailed into town, as seen above. (Hint: don’t be in a rush to jump off the boat when you arrive. There are great shots to be had!)

The first shot is easy and doesn’t require much exertion. Shot no. 2, from the deck of the Catalina Island Co.’s Inn on Mt. Ada bed and breakfast, will require you to hike uphill (about 30-45 minutes), rent a golf cart or book a cab. But it’s worth it, especially at dusk.

The other shot is an easier and shorter climb, in the 15 minute range. Just go up Marilla Avenue, follow the curve, pass the Zane Grey Pueblo Hotel (set to reopen soon, after several years of remodeling) and look down the hill and across the water, with the Inn on Mt. Ada atop the hill. Now you have the shot from the other angle. Both are cool. Which one do you like best.

All these images, and more, are included on the Catalina Island Photowalk video, episode #46 of the Photowalk travel adventure series. What’s your favorite photo spot on the island? I’d love to hear from you. @jeffersongraham on Twitter and Instagram. The Photowalks channel is http://www.youtube.com/jeffersongraham
